The Steigenberger Wiltcher’s is joining forces with Engarde, a new platform for contemporary art, and launching a series of exhibitions in the hotel.
Or how to bring together stars and art...
The Steigenberger Wiltcher’s enjoys a reputation as being one of Belgium’s finest hotels. With its 5-star superior rating, and in the near future a Michelin-starred restaurant, it has always sought to distinguish itself thanks to its star status as well as initiatives that are in line with the expectations and aspirations of its many guests who wish to experience pleasure, elegance and comfort every time they stay. The latest such initiative opens up a new realm of possibilities, both for hotel guests and for talented young artists presented by a new partner platform of the Steigenberger Wiltcher’s for the occasion: Engarde. Engarde aims to showcase emerging contemporary artists. And in this case, to bring together the world of art and a luxurious hotel environment.
Following the check-in check-out exhibition by artists François Patoue and Matthieu Michaut, the Steigenberger Wiltcher’s is once again innovating in the prestige hotel world by giving guests an opportunity to discover the latest trends in the world of art during their stay thanks to an exclusive partnership with the Engarde platform. The new autonomous and dynamic art platform based in Brussels seeks to promote the work of up-and-coming contemporary artists.
This series of original and unparalleled art events is being initiated with the exhibition “ABSTRACTION”. In the run-up to the celebration of International Women’s Day, two female contemporary artists who have the wind in their sails, Hilde Overbergh and Sandra Meilunaite, will set the ball rolling. A first event is taking place in the evening of Thursday 3 March with the opening of “ABSTRACTION”, which highlights the diametrically-opposed painting techniques of these two artists.
The exhibition will take place in The Library, a 340 m² space adjoining the hotel’s lobby, from 3 to 6 March.
Hilde Overbergh creates original paintings and objects which she assembles in a unique way. Actions such as cutting, folding, attaching and organising give structure to her observations and serve as an inspiration and way of working. She creates a tangible reality that resides in the painting itself and in her choice of materials. She explores the formal aspects beyond the boundaries of the frame. Her work is undoubtedly influenced by her training. She holds a Master’s in painting from the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, in addition to a BFA in printmaking from the Academy of Art College in San Francisco and an MFA degree from the PXL in Hasselt.
Sandra Meilunaite is a Lithuanian artist who lives and works in Brussels. She studied visual arts at LUCA in Brussels and obtained a Master’s of Education from LUCA in Ghent. In her work, she attempts to break free from the conventional way of looking and thinking. She creates works that showcase form and colour, stripped of recognisability or functionality. She thus considers art to be a little like architecture: every empty space, whether in an image or in reality, is rapidly filled as soon as an artist takes possession of it. And that will be the case here. Most definitely.
Engarde is an art platform founded by Gianni Isella and Jeroen Maudens, two young Belgian entrepreneurs who are passionate about art. The platform supports contemporary artists in several different ways by allowing them to maximise their visibility within a network of art lovers that is growing daily. The platform also and above all lets them exhibit their paintings at events and in partnerships, both in companies as well as in prestigious hotels, through a lease/sale system. It’s a win-win relationship in which artists are not put under any pressure while being guaranteed a rapid, efficient and constant increase in their reputation. What’s more, no investment is required from the artists. It’s a rare approach in the art world. So rare in fact that it won over the hotel’s management, which saw in it an excellent way to bring together stars and art through various initiatives that will take place this coming year.
At the Steigenberger Wiltcher’s, a second event entitled “Distorted Images” has already been scheduled for the start of April. And at the end of April, it will be followed by an unparalleled event with a scenography that is one of the most innovative ever seen, both in the art world and in the luxury hotel sector...
